Malach in Hebrew can mean ‘messenger’ or ‘angel’. The kabbalists believed that angels interceded between the human and spiritual worlds. Made of divine light, angels manifest God’s various attributes. It is believed that on Shabbat, people are given an extra soul that is brought by an angel. On Friday night, the song “Shalom Aleychem” welcomes the angels.
